Our Story
Some stories begin with a business plan.
Ours began with three horses.
In 1987, the Cardenas family left Colombia and immigrated to the United States carrying little more than a dream, an unwavering work ethic, and three carefully selected horses. Those horses represented far more than transportation or competition—they represented a future.
From that journey came the name 3H.
Originally, it stood for Home, Horses, and Hope—the three things that carried our family through the beginning of a new life. We built a home around our horses, and our hope was that through dedication, integrity, and hard work, we could create something that would last for generations.
Nearly four decades later, that dream has become 3H Sporthorses LLC.
Today, 3H is owned and operated by Fernando Cardenas, whose life has been shaped by horses from the very beginning. Raised in a horse family and influenced by generations of horsemen, Fernando developed a deep respect not only for riding and competition but also for breeding, horsemanship, and the lifelong partnership between horse and rider.
As both an international show jumper and Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, Fernando brings together two worlds that rarely exist under one roof. His understanding of equine health, biomechanics, reproduction, performance, and soundness allows every decision at 3H Sporthorses to be made with the horse's long-term success in mind.
It is this unique combination of experience that defines our program.
We don't simply buy and sell horses.
We carefully breed them.
We thoughtfully raise them.
We patiently develop them.
And when the time is right, we match them with riders who will help them reach their fullest potential.
Our breeding program is built on generations of horsemanship, proven European bloodlines, and a commitment to producing modern sport horses with exceptional athletic ability, rideability, intelligence, and sound minds. Every breeding decision is intentional, balancing performance genetics with temperament, durability, and long-term health.
Because we believe the best horses are not only talented—they are willing partners.
Throughout the years, horses developed by the Cardenas family have gone on to compete at the highest levels of international show jumping, including Grand Prix competition, Pan American Games, Nations Cup events, and Olympic qualification campaigns. While we are proud of those accomplishments, ribbons have never been our greatest measure of success.
Success is watching a young horse develop confidence.
Success is seeing years of careful breeding fulfilled through one special partnership.
Success is placing the right horse with the right rider and watching them grow together.
That philosophy guides every horse that enters our program.
As veterinarians, breeders, riders, trainers, and owners, we understand that every horse has different strengths, every rider has different goals, and every partnership deserves thoughtful consideration. We believe honesty, transparency, and the welfare of the horse should always come before the sale.
Although the meaning of 3H has grown over the years, its heart remains unchanged.
Today, we often say it represents Horses, Health, and Humans—three principles that reflect who we are and how we operate.
The horse always comes first.
Health is the foundation of performance.
People are the reason we love what we do.
Whether we are welcoming a new foal into the world, preparing a young prospect for its first competition, or helping a rider find the horse they've been searching for, our mission is the same:
To breed, develop, and place exceptional sport horses with integrity, knowledge, and an unwavering commitment to the horse.
Because at 3H Sporthorses, every great partnership begins with the horse.
